Athearn acquired Globe Models and began production of the famous F-7 A and B units as originally unpowered kits. Later models utilized the famous rubber band drive but were out done by Revel and Varney who utilized all gear drives for their diesels. The original Globe powered units were a marvel of engineering and were cloned extensively by HO brass manufacturer / importers Olympic Express and Perfect Scale in their brass diesel line. Higher quality nickel silver wheelsets and machined brass universals were among the major differences on the brass diesels. The brass engines also used brass motor casings where Athearn used white metal (Zamac). Athearn originally painted his powered Globe diesels gold, rumored to be a match for theior brass counterparts. Often mistaken for brass in hobby shop display cases, one look at the Olympic Express line and it is easy to see why - they used Atheasrn body shells!
